H-BAR-C Drifters - Western Authentic Display Team

(Living History of the American West 1850-1899)

DriftersThe name ‘Drifters’ first came about when a group of H-BAR-C westerners started guesting at Western re-enactment venues first organised by the ‘Wiltshire Westerners’ at various Country music festivals and steam rally's in the summer of 2008. Sadly the Wiltshire Westerners disbanded in 2009 but it was decided that the ‘Drifters’ (as we had now become known) would carry on representing the American Wild West period at these festivals, carnivals and steam rally's etc. However, instead of re-enacting, which had involved the transportation and erection of a western town, we decided that we would do an authentic exhibition, with each individual being responsible for their own show. This involves each person erecting their own canvas tent or dwelling, and displaying their own western artefacts and any other western regalia including dress, weapons of the period, cooking utensils etc. We even have a working ‘still’ on show, and a lead smelter casting bullets which would have been used in the weapons of that period.

All of us have public liability insurance and we rope off our display area from the public to comply with health and safety regulations. Our main aim is to communicate with the public and try to answer the many questions that are put to us. We have in recent years attended many of the steam rally's within a 40 mile radius of Reading and won an award at the Woodcote steam rally in Oxfordshire for best exhibition in show in 2010 and more recently another award in June 2015, again for best exhibition in show at the Wessex vintage and steam rally at Trowbridge in Wiltshire. We make no charge for our services, footing all costs including travelling expenses out of our own pocket. We get our reward by doing just what we do. This is why all the events that we attend have to be 2 or 3 day events. Any monies donated to us or given to us are forwarded either to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance or the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance depending on which area we were in at the time.

If anyone would like to contact us ‘Jim Shiels’ does all our paperwork and can be contacted on 07876685474.
